BRIDGE OVER THE PARANAÍBA RIVER

BR-153 HIGHWAY –  ARAPORÃ (MG) / ITUMBIARA (GO)

CHALLENGE At the end of March 2010, a Federal Court ordered the DNIT to close one of the lanes of the bridge over the Paranaíba River and determined a maximum allowed load of 45t in a section deemed important for the distribution of agricultural products between the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais. Technical findings pointed out how precarious the structure was: fissures, exposed steel reinforcement, separation of the coating layer from the concrete, iron points sticking out of the driving lanes, deflection and displacement of the center span, which caused the DNIT to order the closing.
SOLUTION We installed speed monitoring equipment and weighing in motion system, thus avoiding traffic interruption. The superstructure was recuperated and reinforced with external pre-stressed cables and the adoption of metal deviators, later coated with structural mortar.
