ACCESS VIADUCT TO PETROBRAS (REFAP)

BR-116 HIGHWAY  –  CANOAS (RS)

CHALLENGE A DNIT inspection detected an acceleration of the deterioration of the concrete structure of the viaduct. With a flow of 170 thousand vehicles/day, interrupting traffic for a minimum of 60 days was not feasible. However no alternative route was available.
SOLUTION To prevent a rupture and collapse, a temporary shoring of the affected sections was executed. The steel superstructure, divided into modules, was built 4km away and transported ready, including paving. After the foundation was reinforced, the old structure began to be demolished without explosives, with simultaneous assembly of the new structure at night when traffic was interrupted. The continuous work allowed for traffic to be resumed after 54 hours, a significant improvement over the 60 days estimated in the DNIT study.
